We are one of the few facilities in the country with the technology and expertise for autologous vaccine and hyperthermic isolated limb perfusion. Basic science research is carried out in the melanoma laboratory, and through a clinical trial program many high-risk melanoma patients may have the opportunity to receive personal melanoma vaccines. The Maryland Melanoma Center has more clinical trials available for adjuvant and metastatic melanoma than any other facility in the state.
What is melanoma?
There are four types of melanoma. The most common type starts in the skin, specifically in the cells that produce pigment or color in the deep layers of the skin. Melanoma of the skin is the leading cause of death related to skin cancers. Fortunately, if treated early, melanoma can be cured.
The Maryland Melanoma Center is a part of The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Cancer Institute at Franklin Square. The center is located on the second floor of The Cancer Institute, 443-777-7911.
