Heart Scan

Heart disease is preventable. A Heart Scan can help.

Are you at risk for heart disease?

Family history is one of the leading, non-preventable risk factors of heart scan. If you're a man 40 years or older or a woman 45 years or older, that adds to your risk.

Other risks include:

  • smoking
  • high blood pressure
  • high cholesterol
  • diabetes
  • being overweight
  • being inactive

If you have any of these symptoms or have a family history of heart disease, you should consider having a Heart Scan. This low cost test could save your life.

What is a Heart Scan?

It is an ultra fast, spiral CT scan that is simple, painless and takes less then 15 minutes.

The scan measures the presence of calcified plaque in your coronary arteries - the buildup that prevents proper flow of blood and oxygen through your heart. When a coronary artery is completely blocked, a heart attack occurs. Knowing the amount of blockage in your arteries can help you make the right choices about your heart health.

What will you learn from the heart scan?

The result of your scan is a calcium score - a number that represents the total amount of hard plaque that is found. A high score means a greater amount of calcified plaque was found in your arteries. Your scan will be evaluated by a board certified radiologist, and a cardiac nurse who will send a report to your personal physician. As always, it's important to talk to your doctor about your family history, your risk factors your Heart Scan results.

The Heart Scan is not covered by insurance, but Franklin Square is offering it for only $100. A physician referral is not required, but you are encouraged to discuss the results with your doctor.
