The Women’s Pavilion houses Obstetrics with Tender Loving Care (OBTLC) and the Birthplace at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center, where we greet and care for more than 2,500 babies annually. The attractive homelike setting of the Birthplace enhances our family-focused approach to childbirth and adds to a memorable birthing experience.

Birthing Suites at the Birthplace

It’s time—your baby is ready to enter the world and meet you! Whether it’s your first time or fifth, the prospect of imminent labor will make you both excited and anxious. You can rest assured that all the members of your health care team are professionals with advanced training and many years of experience. We are dedicated to supporting you and helping you have a positive birth experience. In addition, MedStar Franklin Square is accredited as a Level III-B NICU, so you have the comfort of knowing that should your baby require intensive care due to prematurity, low birth weight or other newborn problems, your baby will not be transferred to another hospital.

There are 14 private birthing suites where you and your baby receive personal and professional care during labor and delivery. Every room has advanced, state-of-the-art health monitoring equipment and amenities including an entertainment center, refrigerator, private bath and a comfortable sleep recliner for a family member. For the safety of our patients, no more than three visitors, including the primary support person and children, are allowed in the labor and delivery (L&D) suites at one time.

Mother and Baby Unit

The time following your baby’s birth is special and you will cherish it forever. After delivery, you and your baby will move to a private postpartum room on our Mother and Baby Unit so you can receive the level of care you need as a new mother. These rooms include the same modern amenities as the birthing suites; by our team of nurses and staff that specializes in new mother and baby care will care for you and your baby.

Your baby’s pediatrician will visit with you, and our lactation consultants are available to assist you with breastfeeding.

As comfortable as our Mother and Baby rooms are, we know there is no place like home! Once you are able to care for yourself and your baby, your doctor or midwife will discuss discharge plans so you and your new family can begin your lives together.

Visiting Hours

On admission, a MedStar Franklin Square nurse will review the patient's/family spokesperson's desires regarding visitors. Visitation hours and the number of visitors per room will be decided by the patient and staff members.

Stork Nursery

We support “rooming in" with your baby so you have plenty of time for bonding. You may keep your baby with you as much as you like. In addition, our Stork Nursery, adjacent to the Mother and Baby Unit, is also available for you. Labor and delivery take a toll on a mother’s body, and you need time to recover. You may bring your baby to the nursery so you have time to rest, shower or eat.

Our Women's Health Nurse Navigator

Our nurse navigator for Women’s Services provides care and support during this postpartum period. She can assist you in getting lactation support, help you schedule follow-up appointments and answer any healthcare questions you may have.

Just like during pregnancy, your body is going through many changes. Now that you have a little one to care for, it is even more important that you take care of yourself, both physically and emotionally.
